So. I was having brunch at Lucky 13’s yesterday, with Lailah, her GMR, her GG, her dad Jordan, her uncle Reece (and his GF, Katie2), Lailah’s mom (Katie McCormick aka Katie1) was working but she flitted in & out during our meal, and I remembered hearing that Comic-Con being in town.
So, after having brunch, I made an executive decision, and headed up to the convention center to see my very first Comic-Con (not knowing the price of admission – silly me). Parked in the underground ramp, walked over to the place, and learned the admission was <mumble, mumble>, about 2 to 3 times more than I thought it was going to be. I hemmed and hawed for a couple of minutes before handing over my left arm, along with an IOU for my second born child, and got my wristband, allowing me onto the convention floor.
Overall, I was a bit underwhelmed – but I guess I enjoyed it, having never been to one before. Lots and lots of people there wearing their costumes!! I probably was the only person there not wearing a costume – no, I think there may have been three of us without costumes – lol.
I did meet a couple of young, starving artists and bought some of their stuff, and actually talked to two (artist) guys and enjoyed learning about them and their art.
I also had a few chances to see the following celebs by either getting a photo op or autograph but did not sign up for any of them: Brent Spiner (“Data”), Lance Reddick (“Fringe”, HBO’s “The Wire”), Kurt Urban (Dr McCoy, Star Trek reboot), and lastly Gillian Anderson (x-files). I didn’t see the latter two, but I did see the first two (Brent and Lance) standing about thirty feet away. I really wasn’t prepared to meet these (famous) people since I wasn’t wearing my “Sunday Best”, but I think I would have enjoyed meeting Brent and Gillian. Maybe, next time.
I ended up buying a new cell phone case ($15), having a very cool artist’s drawing of Ironman on it (will post a pic of it soon).
Lastly, I brought a 11×17 print of a very cool colored drawing of the ‘Big Hero 6’ characters, knowing that this movie was now Lailah’s latest favorite (even overcoming “Frozen”, if you believe that).
So, she was over my place this morning and she sees the print and says “what’s that?”, and “is that for me?”, and “where did you get it, GranPa Brian?”.
I explained to her that I got it at “Comic-Con”. She keeps staring at it, and then rushes (the few feet separating us) back to me, and jumps into my arms, giving me one of the biggest hugs ever, oh my gosh. She just kept hugging me, then saying something like, “thank you, GranPa, thank you for my comicon”. Lol.
She must have said that to me at least a half dozen times before meeting GMR and GG for lunch. She then (very reluctantly) went with them since she was having an overnighter at GMR’s place tonight. Apparently, since GG is in town, my services as a babysittee are no longer needed and “You are now on vacation”, according to GG (that is, until GG goes back home to L.A.). Lol.
Must. Learn. To. Share. Lailah. With. Others.
