Great and interesting video – great background music – much too short.
Bird’s eye view of Detroit (opens in new window)
Sorry to see the beginning parts: drives home the point that certain (industrial & residential) areas are still like a former war zone.
Enjoyed the middle/ending portions a lot better with “hope” of development/revival coming.
You don’t usually get to see this stuff (from a bird’s eye perspective) while driving I-94 from SCS to downtown – a lot is hidden by the freeway ditches – both the ugly, and the dazzling downtown architecture.
Seeing this, I now wonder if the building of the SilverDome (and subsequent move of the Lions to Pontiac) in the early ’70s helped to contribute (somewhat) to the decay of the downtown area.
I know a whole lot of revitalization is occurring in Detroit – I truly hope it’s not too late to save this once great (inner) city. I have great memories of going to my grandparent’s home (on my mom’s side), when they lived near I-94 and East Grand Blvd/Mount Elliot exit (I think the street where they lived [Frontenac] is now mostly devoid of homes, and is now just bare land/fields), and of working downtown at the Burroughs WHQ building in the early 80’s, while going to WSU at the same time.
I know several other urban cities have gone thru this too (NY, Baltimore, etc.), and are also “coming back to life”. You Go, Detroit!
