Movie review – Superman

Well, as some of you may know, I’m an avid reader.  I started “early” in life, biking down a couple of times a week to the local drug (& beer) store on Harper near Frazho (i.e., downtown SCS – what was the name of that place – Leonards??), to buy the latest comic books while in elementary school.  My favorite comics were Batman and Superman – I just couldn’t get enough of them.

I don’t think I ever bought any of the Marvel comics, just mostly the ones from DC.  I never liked or read Ironman.  So, it’s kinda surprising that I really enjoyed the first Ironman movie a few yrs ago – enough that I went to the midnight showing of the 2nd movie in the series.  And, I looked forward to the release of the third movie and really enjoyed seeing when it came out recently.  However, as you may know, “Man of Steel” was recently released, and due to a variety of reasons, the BFF and I happened to choose this film to go see at MOA last night.

I wasn’t really interested in seeing it, but there were few good choices to choose from, and we had both heard that Lone-Johnny-Ranger-Depp-Tonto sucked big time, so we ended up seeing the MOS with Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe and Kevin Costner – I didn’t realize until we were buying the tickets that the latter two were even in the movie – big stars for MOS – very similar to hiring Marlon Brando to play Superman’s father in the original Superman (with Chrisopher Reeve/19798) – it was rumored that Marlon received a million bucks for only one day’s work at the time

So, back to MOS – and, before I start, let me say, my expectations were really, really low.  So, OMG, can you say boring??  I found my attention wandering every few mins – I just could not get into it.  Sure, the special effects are great (I hear they can do amazing things with those new fangled computers these days – unlike in 1978, when Chris Reeve was hung by a crane for his “flying” shots).  Anyway, I had a problem with the violence – it wasn’t bloody or gory – but 2/3rd of the movie was Superman battling Zod (the antagonist) and his buddies.

The last thing I disliked and here is really the reason why I’m writing this – during the last 30 mins where the “bad guys” basically destroy Metropolis, including some huge very realistic scenes showing the complete destruction of numerous skyscrapers.  I thought this part was in very bad taste – Am I the only one that related this skyscraper destruction to the events of 9/11?

Yes, I know, it was my choice to see this movie – I’m just not into violence and cities being ‘destroyed’ any longer…

The only thing I liked was Amy Adams – she did a good job, as always.

Oh, by the way, the reason why I enjoy Ironman so much – it’s due to Robert Downey, Jr (as well as Gwyneth Paltrow).  Yes, the Ironman series has lots of violence and destruction as well, and a part of me thinks Hollywood is focusing way too much energy these days on the battle/destruction scenes, including the Ironman movies as well.
