I’ve been going through some boxes in my garage these last couple of weeks, and found a box which had mostly old personal papers in it, but also had a book or two (which was really strange). The box was a moving box from when I moved about nine yrs ago, and apparently the books inside were “lost” in the move, until now.
The book I found was “Star Wars Trilogy”.
And, while sitting down just now to read the introduction by George Lucas, I had a flashback of a conversation I once had with my brother-in-law (when I was married), sometime in the ’90s, when one of the prequel movies was coming out (forget which one).
So, the movie was coming out and Jerry was over our house visiting, and I happened to mention the movie, and inquired whether he and <my-sister-in-law) were going to see it. His response totally floored me: “I don’t go for that Science Fiction stuff”.
Now, why was I floored?
Because I’d never considered Star Wars to be “Si-Fi”. Star Trek is Si-Fi, but, Star Wars?? Nope, No Siree! And, it was like I was thrown thru a loop – I’d never thought of Star Wars as being a part of that genre, and I just couldn’t wrap my mind around thinking it was. Still can’t, I guess, since I’m writing about it now, ~twenty yrs later.
So, it begs the question: Is Star Wars Si-Fi, or if not, where does it fit in? I’m not going to bias you (yet) by telling you my thoughts/opinion as to the genre I feel it’s a part of.
Your opinion/thoughts on this, please. Inquiring minds want to know, gosh darn it!
