You are here: Home / Activities / Blog / Website / Recent work on my website – wondering if I should change the theme.

Dec 13 2015

Recent work on my website – wondering if I should change the theme.

Not sure what happened today, but the day just flew by (after waking up from a nap in the afternoon.)

I spent a few hours working on my personal WordPress blog/website – the production site, as well as a couple of others that I use to “experiment” with. Other than posting blog updates (it basically mirrors my FB status postings, but also then sorts them into ‘topic categories’, as well as various ‘static’ pages, relating to my Model Railroading hobby, books I’ve read, etc.), I’ve not “played” around with making any significant “user interface” (UI) changes in way more than a year.

But, it may be time for an overhaul, and just might move to a totally new “theme” (or “skin”). Some blogs are going the “minimalist” route, removing the sidebars, and eliminating “clutter”. On the other hand, I’m (as you know), a really sentimental kind of guy, and I just cannot see myself getting rid of the very first website I ever built (because I’m really proud if it), but I’m not going to try to keep two of them (production sites) up and running in parallel either.

Going to play around some more and give it further thought. The theme from StudioPress (called “Nitrous”) that I’m currently using is such an old one (“old” in Internet terms – more than three yrs old) that one WordPress tool I want to try out doesn’t support my current theme since it uses html/xhtml vs. html5, which is where I should be moving toward.

One of the things I did tonight was to take the production website and copy it into one of my development areas, and then I converted (using a utility) all/most of the xhtml into html5 code (really, this is more about the CSS code being converted, but it apparently has something to do with html5 too.).

Problem is, while it converted most everything, it also left a few areas that apparently need to be manually changed/updated, and it’s going to take some time to figure out where those areas lie, before I can convert the production site to html5.

I know the above is gobbly-gook for some (ok, most) of you – no worries, my writing this is just my way of thinking this effort through.

I’ll let you all know what I decide…

Haha.

The current site (the one you are on now).
