Books and ethical quandary

A couple of weeks ago, BFF Rick and I were talking about the books we’ve been reading.

I’m not sure if he reads at many as I do, but I respect his opinion on books.

He indicated he had really enjoyed “Killing Lincoln” by Bill O’Reilly.

I have just a little bit of animosity toward this fellow (read:idiot). I refuse to watch his show or even listen to him (or Rush L.) But, I did get myself a kindle sample of the book, and read enough to convince me to actually buy it ($10). I’m about 25% done and will probably finish it in a few days.

So far, it’s mostly about the end of the civil war, a little bit about Lincoln (and Booth). I’m assuming it’ll will eventually lead more into Lincoln’s (and Booth’s) last few days.

I’m finding it so interesting that I think I’ll be reading up more on the civil war, and slavery, etc.

If I end up liking the entire book, I just might read “Killing Reagan”, and “Killing Kennedy”.

I’m justifying my doing this, since Bill O’Reilly has the same co-author for each of these three books and I’m guessing the co-author (Matt Dugard) is probably the true author and/or wrote the majority of these books, and then let Bill O’Reilly put his name “first” to either sell more books (than if the books were just sold under Mr. Dugard’s name) and/or because Mr. O’Reilly offered him additional financial incentives.

Either way, I’m in an ethical quandary. And, I’m going to provide a couple of analogies:

Rick won’t shop at Hobby Lobby due to the personal beliefs of the owner/CEO of this store…

This is similar to others not eating at Chick-fil-a, due to the owner/CEO’s personal beliefs opposing same-sex marriage…

So, while I personally detest Bill O’Reilly, and his way of thinking as well as the controversies involving the domestic abuse of his (ex)wife and/or his sexual harassment of women, a part of me is disregarding that fact (and, therefore putting $$ into this guy’s pocket) because I just like to read.

Feedback is welcome, either on these books, on Mr. O’Reilly, and/or, on the ethics quandary.
