My remembered version of a known parable/story:
There was this really old guy (age ~57), reading the newspaper, which warned of a flood coming in a month or so. He ignored it, saying, it’s a month (or so) away, I don’t need to prepare. Besides, if worse comes to worse, God will rescue me.
A month later, the old guy heard a tv newscast, warning about a huge flood, to occur in two days. He ignored it (saying God will come and help him, if needed).
The flood comes, he’s at the second story window of his home looking out, and a young man in a canoe, floats by his window, asking if the old guy needs help. Old guy says no, God will come and help me.
Water gets higher and higher, old guy is now outside on his roof. A helicopter sees the old man, flies over and while using a megaphone, asks if he wants to be rescued. Old man yells: Nope, God is coming, he’ll rescue me.
Eventually the flood waters rise so high, the waters overcome and take him away (to heaven).
Old man meets God at the gate, says: I thought you would come and rescue me.
God says: You dummy, I sent you a warning in your newspaper a month in advance, a tv broadcast warning message two days before the flood, a young man on a canoe, and then a helicopter to rescue you, what more could I have done to let you know I was there, rescuing you??
Since last October, I’ve been thrown a lifeline at least eight times by God, I guess it’s time for me to wake up and realize it’s now high time for me to recognize God’s assistance (with rescuing me) and do my part, by accepting/executing the rescue plan (whatever it is).

[Really wish I knew what the frigging plan was.]
