Crabbing about Mass Transit and having to work on a Saturday

There is not much that I crab about or get irritated with these days, but this morning takes the cake.

I had something to do at work today, an all day long thing (upgrade of a product I support). Knowing 35w is under construction/closed, I drove to the MOA train station (actually the 28th ave. station), got on the train, anticipating the usual 30 min ride to downtown.

Halfway there, at 38th street station, an announcement comes over the speakers, “this is last stop for the train, the track ahead is closed for maintenance”.

Ok, got a bit irritated and, actually mentioned to the “conductor”, that they could have placed a person at the stations (or msg on the “next train arriving time” screens), to warn people that the train was being stopped at xx station – I would have gotten back in my car and drove up.

Ok, after gently chewing the head off the conductor (ack’ing that it wasn’t his fault), I was getting out the phone to hail a Uber, but, wait!! These guys were smart enough to have a bus waiting to take all of us downtown.

However, of course it’s not an express, and we are stopping at EVERY station, and, of course when they arrive near US Bank Stadium, I inquire what station is the next stop – he indicates it’s xxx, which is several blocks past Thrivent, so I get off at US Bank Stadium, and start walking to the office, I’m guessing six or seven blocks away. But, I got to see the new stadium park/plaza, which looks really nice. The whole area looks much better than it did a few yrs ago. They really did a nice job.

Anyway, before getting on the lite rail, I was estimating getting to the office by ten am. With this train ride, bus ride, walking, i ended up arriving ~45 mins after that.

Don’t have a clue (yet) how I’m going to get home, since I don’t know if south bound trains are affected by this or not. Will deal with that later. Hopefully the train will be back running later this afternoon/evening.

Ok, crab over – I made it here, didn’t get mugged, kinda hungry (that’s what I get for not getting any breakfast on the way to the train station).
——

The thing I’m doing here for work is a three part deal, and the first part takes 3-4 hours (basically making a copy of the data), then doing the software upgrade – usually an hour, two at the most, I hope. The third phase to similar to the first, don’t ask why we do this, but it’s to replace the “old” data with new (“upgraded, new improved”) data (and takes a similar amount of time). Once all of that is done, a colleague (tomorrow morning) will validate everything is ok, by comparing the copy of the old data with the new data to ensure the upgrade didn’t mess anything up.

While the two copies are going on, I can work on other stuff to keep me busy – in fact, I’ve been developing a new software feature package for the last few weeks for the CMDB SME and it’s going really good – it’s great to be finally developing some features (while it’s labeled as just one “project”, it’s actually six different features, all related to the same CMDB thing), for one of my favorite main users.

——

Been listening to Pandora since getting here – a “show tunes” station – and they are on a “Sound of Music” binge apparently, not that I mind – a lot of good songs there (“what are we going to do about Maria”, “my favorite things”, superkalifegiousespicadocis – oops, that’s from Mary Poppins, but you get the gist), and now, some toe tapping from Grease, etc.

——

More later.

And, how is your day going?
